Mayor Thanked Representatives of AFS on Obtaining Organization of European Indoor Championships

The Mayor of Belgrade Sinisa Mali with his associates received today a delegation of AFS regarding the European Indoor Athletics Championships that is to be held in Belgrade in 2017. The reception was held in the Old Court. Present were the Deputy Mayor Andreja Mladenovic, the President of the City Council Nikola Nikodijevic, the City Manager Goran Vesic, the City Secretary for Sport and Youth Slavko Gak. The AFS was headed by Veselin Jevrosimovic, the president and Slobodan Brankovic, the Secretary General.

The Mayor thanked the AFS officials on their efforts on obtaining organisation of such a big sports event, the biggest sports event in history of Serbian athletics.

“The European Indoor Athletics Championships will be the most important competition in European athletics second only to Olympic Games. This is a great opportunity for Belgrade. It will place our capital on the map of sport metropolises and help boost our economy and tourism. We expect more than 1000 competitors and more than 10 000 tourists,” said Mali.

He promised that Belgrade, together with the Ministry of Youth and Sport, would do all in their power to make the forthcoming Championships an outstanding sports event.

The Mayor mentioned that the capital of Serbia is to host the 2015 European Rowing Championships in May and in 2016 European Water polo Championships, as well as EU Championships in futsal the same year.

“The idea is to establish Belgrade in the next few years as a sports capital, thereby promoting Belgrade and Serbia”, said Mali.

The President of AFS Veselin Jevrosimovic thanked the city of Belgrade and the Ministry of Youth and Sport, without whose help, none of these events could have been organized.

“This is a great opportunity for us to show to the world and to Europe that Serbia is a great sports nation,” stressed Jevrosimovic. He added that Belgrade Arena will be adapted in accordance with standards set by EA.
